Atılım University Preparatory School

Two classes are chosen at a time and five or six students from each class are selected to be on the panel to discuss a given issue. They prepare their arguments in favour of or against the given topic under the guidance of their speaking teachers……..

The Preparatory School Debate Programme at Atılım University is a traditional component of the speaking programme designed under the guidance of the Speaking Unit Head. As opposed to the controlled speaking practice in the classroom, where the students use a particular piece of grammar or a function, the debate activity encourages the students to use their English freely and communicatively. Moreover, it is one activity that helps students develop :

The activity is held between the classes that have reached ‘A level’ and above. Two classes are chosen at a time and five or six students from each class are selected to be on the panel to discuss a given issue. They prepare their arguments in favour of or against the given topic under the guidance of their speaking teachers.

The role of each group is to discuss and defend their argument against that of the opposing group. The performance of each group is assessed by the jury members according to

At the end of the session all participant students are awarded with certificates to show our appreciation of their hard work and enhance their motivation.

Students as well as the teaching staff attend these sessions with enthusiasm and enjoy them a lot. Apart from that, it sets a good example for the other students and motivates them.

In the future, we wish to extend this activity to the Preparatory Schools of other universities in Ankara.

Please find below the March programme for the sessions and the summary of the  debate, the topic of which is “Women Make Better Bosses than Men”

MEN MAKE BETTER BOSSES THAN WOMEN

MEN  MAKE BETTER BOSSES THAN WOMEN:  “...Only twelve countries have women presidents among 191 countries where as in others they are all men…… The best universities in Turkey are directed by men."

WOMEN MAKE BETTER BOSSES THAN MEN: “… Women are sensible… That gives them the quality of understanding other people’s problems with empathy… women are more logical than men. They use both sides of their brains, both left and   right. They combine logic and emotion so this helps women to be successful in business!”

It’s a fact that men are always better than women in terms of ability. Both women and men have some different abilities. Sometimes women are better than men, sometimes men are better than women, while women are more sensitive, men are tougher. Generally women pay attention to trivial things. Women have  the “mother instinct”  so they can’t take risks. And also women gossip too much. Women   can’t treat people equally. Women don’t like to be managed by a woman. Because women bosses don’t let their women employees be promoted. Some women treat women worse then men while some women treat men worse then women. There is no equality, particularly when a women is pregnant and after she has become a mother she behaves more sensitively.

Only twelve countries have women presidents among 191 countries where as in others they are all men.

In some parts of the army in Turkey women are not allowed to hold officer positions.

The best universities in Turkey are directed by men.

Shakespeare’s play Macbeth shows us what women can do to a man and to a country. Macbeth’s wife encouraged Macbeth to kill the king and become the king himself. Because  of this the country collapsed.

When a women has to choose a person to fire they always choose those who have less children, not the worst ones.

To summarise “who is the best homemaker, the husband or the wife?” The answer, of course, is “the wife”.

Please complete this saying of Atatürk’s: Peace at Home, Peace …………………………… (In the world). So, ladies and gentlemen, while the women are bringing peace to the world through creating a stable home environment, please let the men get on with running the economy!

WOMEN MAKE BETTER BOSSES THAN MEN

Women are sensible. That gives them the quality of understanding other people’s problems with empathy. Women are more disciplined and more careful than men. Details are important for women and details make business perfect. Women are tidier than men. This helps them not to forget anything. They are mothers at the same time so they help their workers to get over the stress. They  never boast about things in which they succeeded before. They can admit when they do wrong things but men never admit their faults. Men are ready to argue with anyone when they are nervous.

Nowadays, men choose women as their company managers and secretaries. Why? It has two reasons,

 ·         Firstly, this is about sexuality and physical appearance. Men have weakness regarding    sexuality.

 ·         Secondly, women are more logical than men. They use both sides of their brains, both left and   right. They combine logic and emotion so this helps women to be successful in business!
